Death is Forever est le douzième roman bondien écrit par John Gardner (novélisations incluses). Il fut publié pour la première fois au Royaume-Uni en 1992, mais il n’a jamais été traduit en français.

Synopsis

La guerre froide est terminée. Mais avant que le mur de Berlin ne tombe, « Cabal » était l’un des plus longs et des plus efficaces réseau d’espionnage de l’Ouest implanté dans le bloc de l’Est. Après que deux membres de Cabal aient été retrouvés mort dans des circonstances mystérieuses en Allemagne, M demande à Bond de faire équipe avec l’agent de la CIA ‘Easy’ St John pour mener l’enquête et retrouver les membres restant Cabal.

Bond et Easy se rendent vite compte qu’ils ne peuvent pas faire confiance aux membres survivants de Cabal et essayent de retrouver Wolfgang Weisen, un homme qui a passé une partie de son enfance avec Joseph Staline et qui est soupçonné de vouloir tuer les membres de Cabal un par un. 007 découvre alors que Weisen a élaboré un complot visant à faire renaître le communisme international…

From the moment he went through passport and customs control at Berlin’s Tegel Airport, James Bond knew he was being followed. He arrived on the late afternoon flight from Heathrow – Easy St John would follow on the evening service – and at first it seemed that little had changed since he was last in Berlin, before the incredible events which had altered not only the landscape but also the hearts and minds of a newly united people. Tegel, with its calm sense of Germanic order, did not appear to be any different.

As for Berlin itself, the Wall had gone; the city was whole again. You could almost touch the regenerated freedom in the air; but it was only when the taxi turned onto the Ku’damm that he saw the streets had undergone a subtle change, and that the glittering store windows had shifted infinitesimally.

In the old, bold days, the sidewalks of the Ku’damm were filled with a mixture of affluent Berliners, military personnel and strolling tourists. Now the crowds seemed larger. The Berlin matrons still sported their little hats with perky feathers; a great deal of fur and leather adorned people’s bodies. But moving along, next to the familiar, there were other pedestrians, less well heeled, shabbier, and with looks on their faces which reflected envy. The poor cousins of the old East Berlin were slowly integrating with their more comfortable relatives. It was a fleeting message, and Bond did not linger on it for he was more concerned with the surveillance which had picked him up at the airport.

Anecdotes

Il s’agit du premier roman de James Bond qui est publié après la dissolution de l’Union soviétique. Jusque ici, les romans de Bond avaient tous été publié durant la guerre froide.

Le tunnel sous la Manche dans lequel se rend Bond était toujours en construction au moment où le roman fut écrit.

Tous les chapitres, à l’exception du dernier (intitulé R.I.P.), comportent le mot « Death » dans leurs titres.

Bien que l’éditeur britannique Hodder & Stoughton y était farouchement opposé, James Bond pratique le sécurisexe dans ce roman. John Gardner avait insisté sur ce point auprès de l’éditeur, notamment à cause de l’épidémie de sida.
